Airports :( :( :(

We finished packing up this morning and our limo was waiting outside early.  But we bided our time to make sure we had everything.

When we were ready, we said our good-byes to David (he’s home for a couple of weeks) and hopped into the limo (well, I hopped anyway).  We left for Cambridge to pick up our friends, Dan and Joanne Clements.

We then cracked open a bottle of  Prosecco to share on the way to the airport.  What better way to start the day (9 am or so?)!






So we arrived at the airport around 9:50 and did the check-in thing.  Much quicker when we don’t have to check any bags.  Avoided that line.  And there’s not much happening here this morning as we got through security with virtually no one in front of us.  

We were notified by Air Canada that our flight was delayed half an hour due to weather at the arrival airport.  


Fast forward a bit, and now a little more of an issue than just delayed.  We JUST discovered our flight was cancelled.  Oh crap :(   Now what?! We’re trying to rebook, so we’ll see where that gets us.  I guess although the typhoon has passed by, the airport is still closed probably due to flooding, but we’re not sure exactly why at this point.

We’re currently at the Sheraton Hotel at the airport and hopefully will get out of here tomorrow.  I’ll keep you posted!

Nara (or Deertown)

We were off earlier this morning to catch a train from Kyoto to Nara.  It’s essentially a suburb of Kyoto, but is about an hour away by local train.  We made our way via subway to the train station and  stood at the triangle spot on the pavement (yep, things are very organized) to board the train. We arrived and took taxis to our first stop.  By the way, it’s raining today and didn’t stop all day long.  But you make the best of it. On the way, we came across all these deer.  They’re not kidding when they post this sign!   They were everywhere!  I thought initially it was some kind of zoo where the deer roam free, but no, they’re all over the place!  We learned from our guide that the deer are believed to be divine messengers (there’s a whole story about that). Temples and Shrines

They have a spray in the hotel room.  Love the translation. There are thousands of temples and shrines in Kyoto.  Apparently, it was spared during WWII because of this.  Well, today we visited 6 of them, including some of the most famous here. Gotta love signs. The first one was called the Daitoku-ji Temple.  It was very serene (hardly anyone around).  They meditate at the Zen rock garden.  Zen is a part of Buddhism that practices equanimity and awareness. Christianity was introduced in Japan by the same Spanish jesuits as worked on converting our own native people.  But it was banned and people suffered a horrible fate if they worshipped Christ.  This rock garden at the same place shows the rocks in the formation of a cross.  It had to be very subtle things like this.  The rocks form a shape of the cross (the right side is hidden by the hedge). Kamakura

I neglected to add this photo to yesterday’s blog - the 4 of us at the VERY long section of airport. We were heading to Kamakura today, which is on the coast just southwest of Tokyo.  It’s about an hour and a half drive, partially on highway, and partially through cities.  Fortunately, we took our lucky bus, and not our unlucky one.     Tokyo has a sort of Eiffel Tower of their own.  I guess it was built in  the 1950s for television and radio reception.  A little outdated now, but a landmark they use to light up  in different colours. Since it was a fair distance, we had some time to kill on the bus.  So our local guide taught us some origami.  We can do anything! We first arrived at the Hokokuji Temple and Kamakura Bamboo Garden.  It’s a Zen temple established in 1334 to commemorate one of the first shoguns.  This is a little Buddha seen everywhere in Japan.        A quiet, sere...
